Let the island set the line.

Size island lighting to the usable island length and the fixture diameter. A linear fixture can begin at one-half to two-thirds of the island length; repeated pendants commonly start 24–30 inches center to center and 30–36 inches above the counter. Adjust every range for shade width, seating, work zones, and sight lines.

Begin with 1/2–2/3 of the usable island length.
Pendant spacing
For medium pendants, 24–30 inches center to center is a useful first layout, subject to the actual shade diameter.
Open gaps
Aim for roughly 12–24 inches between shade edges and about 6–12 inches from an outside shade to the island end.
Hanging height
Begin 30–36 inches above the countertop and raise the mockup when views or taller users require it.
Example

Worked example: three 12 inch pendants on an 84 inch island

Equal open gaps are (84 − 3 × 12) ÷ 4 = 12 inches. That places the pendant centers about 24 inches apart. Treat this as a paper layout first, then check seats, work zones, cabinet doors, and the view across the room.

Choose one rhythm

A linear fixture creates one continuous line; repeated pendants create intervals. Use the architecture and cabinetry to decide which rhythm belongs in the room.

Protect views and movement

Check the view across the island, cabinet doors, tall users, and the path around stools before fixing the final height.

Confirm the exact fixture's electrical, dimming, output, mounting, and installation requirements. A spatially suitable shape is not proof of technical suitability.
